Navigating Sales Leadership
Steve recently wrapped up a nine-month engagement in a prestigious role as GM of Sales and Customer Success for a tech firm specializing in payroll and HR services. What started as a two-day-a-week commitment evolved into three days, showcasing the demand for his expertise in sales leadership.
"I've successfully hired my replacement and have now exited that engagement."
This transition underscores the importance of effective delegation and the value of building a strong team that can continue the work he started.
The Value of External Perspectives
In conversations with various CEOs and executives, a recurring theme emerged: the need for external advisors to facilitate tough conversations and implement necessary changes.
"They need someone external to make this engagement feel more meaningful and real."
This highlights the unique position fractional leaders occupy, acting as catalysts for change and accountability within organizations.
A Glimpse into Prospecting
Steve also shares his experiences of reaching out to potential partners, emphasizing the thrill of the cold outreach process.
"I've literally been living that dream of being back in the day of those sales prospecting pieces."
The excitement of closing deals continues to be a source of motivation, especially when the reward comes in the form of celebration within his CRM.
Lessons from Losses
Not every engagement leads to success, as Steve reflects on a recent loss where miscommunication played a crucial role. The prospect's lack of preparation for their meeting ultimately led them to seek a more traditional hiring route.
"He's going to consider those options anyway... there's no risk really entailed in that whatsoever."
This experience serves as a reminder of the importance of clarity and preparation in securing engagements.
Exercise and Progress
On a personal note, Steve has been keeping up with his exercise routines, sharing his milestones and progress.
"I’m now at one thousand and ten days in a row of sit-ups."
This commitment to health mirrors his professional dedication — both require discipline and consistency.
As Steve wraps up this month’s reflections, he looks forward to sharing more insights next time.
Until then, keep striving for progress in your own journey!
