Champions Do Extra
Lead by Example, Consistency over Motivation, Humility, Accountability, Resilience, Discipline in the Unseen Work, Servant Leadership, and High Standards without Excuses are key principles to be mindful of in sales leadership.

Recently I noted a number of themes that I see and can relate to between professional sport and sales leadership. One of the biggest leadership messages from Brad Thorn’s book “Champions Do Extra” is that leadership is not about titles, charisma, or being the loudest voice in the room. It's about standards, discipline, and consistently doing the things others won't.
Here are some of the key leadership qualities Brad Thorn reinforces throughout the book:
1. Lead by Example
Thorn built his reputation through action rather than speeches. Whether it was extra fitness sessions, recovery work, or preparation, he demonstrated that leaders earn credibility through behaviour.
Leadership lesson: Your team watches what you do more than what you say.
2. Consistency Over Motivation
A major theme is that success comes from repeated habits rather than occasional bursts of effort. Thorn talks about the importance of daily disciplines and refusing to cut corners.
Leadership lesson: Great leaders create consistency, especially when conditions are difficult.
3. Humility
Despite winning almost everything possible across rugby league and rugby union, Thorn is known for staying grounded and focusing on the team rather than individual recognition.
Leadership lesson: Humility creates trust and keeps leaders focused on improvement rather than ego.
4. Accountability
The phrase "Champions Do Extra" is really about personal accountability. Thorn repeatedly emphasises owning your preparation, fitness, mindset, and standards rather than blaming circumstances.
Leadership lesson: Elite performers don't wait to be managed; they manage themselves.
5. Resilience
Thorn's career spanned over 20 years at the highest level and he was still competing professionally at 41. His longevity came from resilience, recovery, adaptability, and mental toughness.
Leadership lesson: Leadership is often measured by how you respond to setbacks, not success.
6. Discipline in the Unseen Work
One of the strongest messages from the book is that excellence is built when nobody is watching. Extra training, preparation, recovery, learning, and self-improvement.
Leadership lesson: The unseen work determines the visible results.
7. Servant Leadership
Many of Thorn's teammates and coaches describe his care for others, mentorship, and willingness to put team success ahead of personal achievement.
Leadership lesson: The best leaders elevate the people around them.
8. High Standards Without Excuses
Thorn's philosophy centres on creating a personal standard that doesn't fluctuate based on mood, circumstances, or external pressure.
Leadership lesson: Leaders set the benchmark for what is acceptable within a team.
While the title itself says it all: Champions do extra. In a business and sales leadership context, that translates to:
- Making one more prospecting call
- Doing one more coaching session
- Preparing more thoroughly for customer meetings
- Following up faster than competitors
- Reviewing deals more deeply than others.
The leaders who consistently "do extra" often create the biggest gap between themselves and average performers.
For someone focused on sales leadership, the strongest crossover from Thorn's book is that high performance is rarely about talent alone, it is about standards, habits, accountability, and the willingness to do the work others consider optional.
